It’s been said that when we work; we work. But when we pray, God works. I believe that there is some truth to that little cliché. As we finish up our study through the book of James this week we will be examining the subject of prayer and practical Christianity. While I strongly believe in the power of prayer, which is actually the sermon title for Sunday, I also know that real authentic prayer is not something of consumerism. God is not a vending machine and James 4 made it clear that there are times that we do not receive what we are praying for because we are asking with wrong motives. On the other hand, God is living and active even today and is mindful of the prayers, praises and petitions of his children. I do believe that Christ followers are called to engage in this spiritual discipline more than what we are actually doing. I do believe that as we more fully live out a prayer filled life, we will see more of His working in our lives. Some great books on the subject are listed below. Are there some resources you are aware of or great prayer stories you’ve experienced?
Power through Prayer by E.M. Bounds
Too Busy Not To Pray by Bill Hybels
With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray
The Autobiography of George Muller
Anything by: Muller, Bounds, Charles Finney, Moody or Spurgeon on the subject.
